Hey it’s Sunny Lenarduzzi reporting live for the Sunny Show! You know what? Being your own boss is pretty exhausting sometimes, and there’s one lesson that I’ve learned in almost a decade of running my own business, over, and over, and over again. That’s what today’s video is all about.
One of my boss inspirations, Arianna Huffington, the founder of, “The Huffington Post,” wrote a brilliant book called, “The Sleep Revolution: Transforming your life one night at a time.” In her Ted Talk she explains how a good nights rest makes you your best. Make sure to click the video above and see what she has to say!
So how do you sleep your way to the top? These are my top three tips to getting the Z’s that you need:
Tip number one, is say no to screens. If you’re taking your phone to bed with you, you’re kind of screwing your sleep up in a big way. If you have a TV in your room, you’re also screwing your sleep up. Try to put your phone away at least an hour before bed so you’re not constantly playing around on it, and your minds not super activated before you’re trying to get a good nights sleep. I just kicked my TV right out of my room, so I don’t have that distraction in there at all. It’s proven by a few studies that having screens in your room, or having too much screen time before bed can actually cause anxiety, poor sleep patters, and attention problems.
Tip number two, is say no to snooze. I know, you’re rolling your eyes right now because it’s so easy to hit that snooze button. The problem is, fragmented sleep is actually almost worse than no sleep at all because you’re constantly going back to sleep, waking up. Going back to sleep, waking up. It confuses your body to the point that you’re pretty much groggy all morning, and sometimes all day long. It’s better to just say no to the snooze button. How do you stop yourself from hitting that snooze button? Well my best tip is actually to make the wake up process as peaceful as possible. I have one gadget that is my go to for making it a serene wake up every morning.
As a part of Team Telus, I’m so grateful to be on top of tech trends, and one of my favourite new gadgets is the Aura Connected Alarm Clock. It’s a high tech alarm clock hidden in a stylish lamp that wakes me up with a combination of energizing light, and customized music. I actually look forward to waking up now, and I’m not tempted to fall back asleep. Plus it pairs with an app on my phone that actually tracks every single activity during my sleep, so I can track how long I’m sleeping for, and how deep I’m sleeping for every night.
Tip number three is say yes to self-care. You know how babies have a bedtime routine, and it’s like bath time? You can do that as an adult too. As soon as I’m done with my phone, and I’m done with work, I try and keep these sleep friendly activities top of mind every single night, so it gets me into the routine of kind of shutting my brain and my body down so I’m ready for a good nights sleep. My go to sleep activities are, I always make myself a cup of chamomile tea, and I draw myself a warm bath. I sit in silence, and always do about five minutes of evening meditation just to calm down my mind, and I find that writing the top five things I’m grateful for in my gratitude journal always helps me end my day on a really grateful, peaceful, and positive note so I’m not feeling any stress or anxiety when I try to go to sleep.
Reading always makes me tired, so I try to read a chapter of my favourite book every night before I go to bed. Finally, I pretty much can’t sleep now without my Sage Diffuser. This thing is a God send. I have one in basically every room in my house. I put in a relaxing scent, and it just diffuses throughout the whole room and it really does help you unwind at the end of a long day.
On that note, is your bedroom your sanctuary? When was the last time you actually got new sheets, new mattress, new pillows? All of those things make a huge difference in the quality of your sleep, and the amount of sleep you’re actually getting every night. It might be time to invest in yourself. If you want to invest in yourself even further and wake up with purpose every single day, make sure that you join me. “Be Your Own Boss Mastermind Group,” on Facebook, which is filled with thousands of entrepreneurs from all over the world, and we’re supporting each other, and following our dreams on our own terms.
